This is largely due to the fact that they have small sensors that have relatively low light sensitivity due to tiny pixels.

GoPro actually aggravated this situation in the GoPro HERO9 Black by increasing the sensor resolution from 12MP to 23.6MP without increasing the sensor size. Like other GoPro flagships, the 8 Black and 9 Black have sensors measuring 1/2.3 inches. This is the size of the sensors in most budget cameras.

However, GoPro makes the most of the IMX677. This sensor supports DOL-HDR, which allows it to capture data with short and long shutter speeds while reading data from the sensor, rather than sequentially shooting one frame, then the next and combining them.

9 Black has an HDR photo mode, but not an HDR video. DOL-HDR allows you to use HDR without ghosting, and the company's reputation in the field of color customization suggests that it will cope with this better than competitors. Hopefully we'll see this in HERO10 Black.

The current version of the GoPro HERO9 Black has a 2.27-inch screen, very similar in size to the 2.25-inch screen of the DJI Osmo Action.
